Weed eating and edging

A mower cannot reach along fences, around mailboxes and trees, beside beds, or down the edges of the drive and sidewalk. That is where you weed eat. Trimming matches the mowed height in tight spots. Edging cuts a clean line where grass meets concrete or a bed.

Weed eating

How the job is done

  1. 1Trimming works with the head held level and the line just above the turf, so it does not scalp a strip.
  2. 2Edging turns the line upright along the concrete for a clean vertical cut.
  3. 3The line has to stay off tree trunks; hits to the bark can girdle a young tree.
  4. 4Clippings are blown off walks and drives at the end.

What affects the cost

  • How much fence, bed and sidewalk edge there is
  • How many obstacles
  • Slopes and ditches
  • How overgrown it is

Local conditions

Bermuda spreads by runners and creeps across sidewalks and into mulch beds all summer, so edges fill in fast here, and a scalped strip browns quickly in July heat. Germantown's code keeps grass on most lots under 6 inches.

Questions homeowners ask us.

What is the difference between trimming and edging?

Trimming cuts grass in tight spots to match the lawn. Edging cuts a crisp line along concrete and beds.

Can a string trimmer hurt a tree?

Yes, if the line hits the bark. Repeated hits can girdle a young tree, so keep the line off trunks.

Why do edges grow over so fast?

Bermuda grows by runners, so in summer it pushes across walks and into beds within weeks.

Do I need to weed eat every time the grass is cut?

Usually, yes. Edges and fence lines grow at the same pace as the lawn, so they look ragged if they are skipped.

Is the estimate really free, and what happens at the visit?

Free, with no obligation. Darren Fant walks the site, measures, looks at drainage and access, and gives a written quote. Every quote is written after seeing the yard, because access and grading differ house to house. Call or text 901.406.6005, or email darren@fantslandscape.com.
